Smart Art for Preschool
So! You've been surfing the web looking for those perfect, age appropriate Arts and Crafts ideas for your preschool classroom and you've suddenly realized a few things about many of those projects.
#1- Many of the projects are just not appropriate for kids of all ages and abilities
#2- Most are not open ended or creative
#3- And a good deal of the crafts include costly materials
So you keep looking.... and you see lots of websites claiming to give you art activities that are beneficial for kids. Or else you see websites for adult crafts. Lots of them. BUT! Whoever said art was about drawing straight lines? Since art is so wonderful and so much fun it is probably THE most common activity in any preschool classroom in the world and as a preschool teacher you most probably spend lots of time trying to come up with interesting art activities for your students...that's why you're surfing the web looking for some right now. ALL children are artistic, it has to be given free rein in a structured manner and as a result, art can be a crucial vehicle to help develop basic developmental skills.
You know, unfortunately, real Art in the adult world is relegated to people who actually consider themselves artistic. Many adults who love art and would love to be really creative but they have no ideas or inspiration of their own so they turn to crafts
How many of us adults are so scared to do anything in art because after all "I can't draw a straight line"
Kids don't have those blocks that we do and no child will turn down a chance to do art because she thinks she can't.....
until us adults ruin it for her and him.....
by giving them an endless supply of copycat crafts to make.
Lets look at some of these criteria that should be part of parcel of almost every art project.
#1-Every art project should be one that can be done by any age child, with any level of ability, with minimal instruction.
#2- Art projects should be set up to allow children to think and solve problems
#3- Art should be a vehicle for children's self esteem to flourish
#4-Art should foster creativity.
#5-And though not an absolute prerequisite, wonderful activities can be done with minimal cost
If your projects don't meet these criteria it may be time to reexamine the results of traditional arts and crafts
Take this very distressing example....
A woman I know, a real educator was getting on in years and had quit full time preschool teaching. She was asked one day to substitute in a second grade classroom.....
She decided she was going to give these children a bit of extracurricular activity as she felt bad for them sitting so quietly at their desks all day. So as a former preschool teacher she decided to give them an art activity.
She prepared all of the materials and being a progressive teacher did not have a specific idea of what the art should look like when finished and told the children as much. She had one child help her hand out the materials and quite satisfied with herself sat back down to do some of her own work. She told them to begin and lost herself in her work.
A few minutes later she realized the classroom was extra silent and she gave a quick glance up.....Every child was sitting in their seat, not moving...
They were frozen!
"What's wrong", she asked them in alarm. "Is everything OK?"
"Well!" a few of them answered timidly
"YOU DIDN'T SHOW US WHAT TO DO!"
They were absolutely helpless.
The teacher started asking questions and realized that these children were the victims of the classic ARTS & CRAFTS syndrome. All throughout their preschool years the only art they ever did was by copying a model of the teacher or a specific crafts project that had everyones basically looking the same.
These art projects had taught the children....
#1-They were incapable of creating on their own
#2-The teachers ideas would always be better than theirs
#3-They could not be trusted to think for themselves
Their self esteem was so damaged that they were scared to do something that might be WRONG!
(Now you know why there are so many adults, confident adults who think they can't draw a straight line.)
This is not an uncommon problem.
I have a cousin that related to me her feelings that would surface as a kindergarten student, when the teacher would hold up a copy of a project and say "This children, is what we will make today". My cousin's feelings of inferiority would surface as she would mutter to herself "Mine will never look like that".
If this is so common why do SO many teachers fall into this ARTS & CRAFTS trap?
I have a few ideas why, tell me if you agree with my analysis
- Many teachers feel they must give in to uneducated parents demand for projects
- Other like the structure and the control these projects give them.
- A select few would love to change but don't' know how. They don't realize how easy it really is and how much satisfaction they and their students would get out of doing structured, open ended art (Smart Art). They think that non crafts art or "Smart art " is a little collage and maybe some finger painting.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Faige Kobre
I am a former preschool teacher and director with a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education from Bank Street College of Education.
I am definitely one of those people who suffered from an overly structured preschool program. I am a very creative person with a definite block and so I make up for my deficit by teaching teachers how to tap into every child's creativity so that they will grow upto be thinking, independent, creative, self starters. (Or at least enter elementary school that way)
I created this guide to help any teacher ,( traditional, progressive, Montessori)that wants to use these techniques but is hesitant for many reasons. This guide is good for new and experienced teachers as it takes you on a journey in a step by step fashion/ how to set up and run the most wonderful non crafts, progressive, Smart Art program.

"I find you information extremely helpful. The information is presented clearly and there are lots of great ideas and extension on those ideas. The materials you suggest are easily accessible and your ideas are very open ended and the children are tnot copying something the teacher has maed.

“Okay, so how much do you think this will this cost you”?
Let’s just imagine taking a standard ART for teachers course in your college curriculum. A required course. You’d have to read some basic texts on art theory if you can get through them at all….then you’d spend your days in the course actually doing various art activities that are appropriate for young children.
At least that’s what I did in graduate school.
But you will still be expected to pay at least $200-$300 per credit. Considering that each course is around 3 credits that leaves you with a bill of around$600-$900 and that’s in a cheap college. In a school like Bank Street it will be closer to $2000 a course.
Now remember the amount of information listed that is packed into this guide to Smart Art. ...and we can easily say there is at least about $500-$700 worth of information in it if not more.
But I do know that teachers are not at the high end of the pay scale and I really want teachers everywhere to be able to afford this and don’t want any preschool teachers to be without this indispensable guide. What a dream to have teachers all over the world giving children the experience of Smart Art.
So I'll tell you what I was able to do for you
Due to some glitches in the e book software when compiling the e book I noticed some spelling errors that went undetected
PLUS the software did not allow me to insert page numbers, a real inconvenience)
$87 was the price we were initially selling it for...
BUT...due to the above problems, I decided to sell it for for a very limited time only , practically giving it away for$44. and…as soon as this trial period is up and all of the glitches are fixed it will go right back up to $87.
